7 Eco-Friendly Cleaner Recipes for a Chemical-Free Home

We all know that a lot of the general household cleaners are really toxic for both the environment and humans alike.

That knowledge doesn’t help environmentally-minded shoppers find the kind of eco-friendly cleaner that they want. Sadly, a lot of stores only carry the harmful types without any thought to other varieties.

That is why a lot of people are turning towards making their own cleaners instead of relying on the big stores to supply them. We’re in luck that there are a lot of materials that can be used to make cleaners that are easily accessible and often much cheaper than the big name brands.

We’ll be going through 7 kinds of cleaners that are sure to leave your home beautiful and chemical-free.

The Base of Any Eco-Friendly Cleaner

Baking Soda: This makes for a natural abrasive to any cleaner recipe, while also helping to fight against odors and stains. It’s cheap and it’s non-toxic. Even on its own, it can be a great tool for any style of green living.

Hydrogen Peroxide: It’s a great disinfectant and can also help remove stains. It has some bleaching properties but still is non-toxic and can be super cheap too!

Liquid Castile Soap: This soap is not petroleum-based like most other soaps. Instead, it is vegetable-based which makes it 100% non-toxic so that you can use it in the shower or in your cleaners. It is perhaps the generally most expensive thing on our list here, but it is possible to buy it in a bulk size so that you don’t pay as much in the long run.

Vinegar: It also can be a kind of disinfectant while, at the same time, helps to remove stains and sanitize an area. Although it is an all-natural mild acid, it is non-toxic and can be bought at a very cheap price. Because of its acidic nature, however, you shouldn’t use vinegar with acetate fabrics or stone surfaces.

Lemon Juice: Not only does it smell great, but it’s also all-natural and can help cut against grease. It can also be a great way to keep pests and bugs from ruining an eco-friendly garden!

Liquid All-Purpose Cleaner

  • 1 gallon of hot water
  • 1 Tablespoon of baking soda
  • 2 Tablespoons of liquid castile soap

Tip! If you want to make a more abrasive all-purpose cleaner, leave out the hot water and simply mix the two remaining ingredients into a paste.

Counter Spray

  • 16 ounce recycled plastic bottle
  • ¼ teaspoon of liquid castile soap
  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • Enough hot water to make it to your desired consistency

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

  • 1 part liquid castile soap
  • 1 part baking soda

Tub Cleaner

  • Scrub with just some simple baking soda and a rag
  • Wipe with full-strength vinegar

Dishwasher Detergent

  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • 2 cups of borax

Tip! You can add in some unsweetened lemon drink mix for a lemony fresh scent that won’t stick to your dishes!

Window and Glass Cleaner

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon of liquid castile soap

Tip! Another easy recipe is to use 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water!

Laundry Detergent

  • 1 cup of grated vegetable bar soap
  • ½ cup of washing soda
  • ½ cup of borax

Tip! For large loads, use about 2 Tablespoons of the detergent. For smaller ones, you only need about 1 Tablespoon!

Greener Home,Here are 4 principles to create yours

4 Principles for a Greener Home

Have you heard about Whirlpool’s Zera Food Recycler? It’s a new kitchen appliance that lets you turn leftovers into fertilizer with just a touch of a button. At CES 2017, it bagged the Best of Innovation Award.

Now there are other household appliances that help create a greener home. For example, FridgeCam by Smarter Applications sends reminders (via a mobile app) to users about food expiry dates.

There’s also Scenario Manager by Bosch Smart Home System, which alerts users about adjusting their heating or cooling systems or turning off electrical appliances and lights when they go out.

Of course, eco-friendly household items aren’t the only way to make your home greener. Here are four other ways you can green up your home and life.

4 Greener Home Principles

install-solar-panels. Install solar panels.

In a previous post, we talked about renewable energy sources and how solar energy is perhaps the easiest green energy source to understand. One way you can harness solar power for your home is to install solar panels.

If you’re worried about the costs, you’d be happy to know that going solar isn’t as expensive as it was before. Plus, long-term savings mean you’ll be getting back your initial investment.

The government also provides incentives and tax breaks to people who use solar power in their homes.

save-energy. Look for opportunities to save energy.

Whether your house is new or has been around for a long time, you need to conduct a home energy audit from time to time.

Energy-saving technology is rapidly advancing so homeowners should always be on the lookout for ways to do energy efficiency upgrades.

One easy way to do this is to check for air leaks. Sealing air leaks can give you up to 20% energy savings per year. Make sure to avoid backdrafts by learning more about proper ventilation.

You should also check insulation, inspect heating and cooling systems regularly, and opt for efficient lighting.

clean-air. Keep the air clean.

Plants are natural air filters. They effectively absorb airborne pollutants from furniture, electronic equipment, and carpets. Examples of air-cleaning houseplants are spider plants, garden mums, Boston ferns, and bamboo palms.

You should also replace strong chemical cleaners with eco-friendly alternatives, preferably fragrance-free ones. Don’t forget to filter your air and skip the air fresheners as these just mask odors and don’t really clean the air.

Conserve water. Conserve water.

Freshwater is a precious resource. Take showers and save baths for special occasions. If local regulations permit the use of gray water, use it to water plants and flush the toilet.

Other simple ways to conserve water include waiting for a full load. This applies to both washing machines and dishwashers.

And speaking of doing dishes, you’ll save more water by filling the sink than leaving the faucet running. Use a tub for rinsing if you don’t have a double sink.

Wrapping Up for a Greener Home

Greening up your home and life isn’t just about buying appliances that save energy. You can create a greener home by installing solar panels, doing regular home energy audits, keeping the air clean, and conserving water.

Do It Like Denmark: How to Avoid Wastage of Food

Learn what the country has done to avoid wastage of food.

Avoid wastage of food., Do you feel like you could be doing more to avoid wastage of food?

Well, considering 50% of all produce in America is thrown away (That’s 60 million tons annually) there’s a good chance we could all do a little better with our food waste management.

But just how do we tackle such a major problem?

As it turns out, the tiny country of Denmark is emerging as a world leader in food waste management. In fact, according to the Agriculture and Food Council, Denmark has eliminated 25 percent of its food waste in a 5-year time span.

Taking a look at what they’re doing right is a great place to start when it comes to making an effort to reduce our own waste problem.

So just exactly what are they doing right?

Read this article to find out!

1. They Have a Leader

If you think one person can’t make that much of a difference when it comes to such a big problem, think again.

Denmark’s waste management effort is spearheaded by a passionate leader, Selina Juul.

A Russian immigrant who came to Denmark as a teenager, Juul was shocked to find the way Danes took their surplus of food availability for granted.

Ignited to make a difference, Juul launched a group called “Stop Wasting Food.” This group advocates for change on the governmental level. They have been credited for the past several changes the government has made in regards to food waste management.

2. They’ve Made it Trendy

Approaching food waste management as a chore is the wrong angle.

Because who enjoys doing chores, right?

Instead of marketing food waste management as a chore, they market it as a cool, trendy thing to do.

And who better to make a trend seem cool then the Danish Princess herself?

Princess Marie attended the grand opening of WeFood. food is a grocery store located in Copenhagen (Denmark’s capital) that accepts donated food and sells it back to the general public. The store has gained so much popularity, they’ve even opened a second location.

3. Danes are Frugal

It’s common sense that when things are more expensive, you’re less likely to throw them away.

Danes are living proof of this concept.

When you spend money on expensive yet quality food, you’re going to be a lot less inclined to throw it away.

4. The Government Is Behind Them

While individuals can make a great change, things tend to move along a lot faster when the government gets involved.

Luckily, the Danish government is as into being trendy and frugal as its citizens.

The Danish minister for food and environment allocates a large sum of money to support projects tackling food waste management.

Contacting your local government to encourage them to help with food waste management is a great way to create change.

5. Small Country

There’s not much you can do about the size of your country, so this advantage is a little out of our own control.

Yet, it is important to remember that it’s a lot easier to propel a campaign to avoid wastage of food when your population is about the same size as the state of Wisconsin.

Avoid Wastage of Food: Bottom Line

While the problem of food waste won’t be solved overnight, there are ways you can make a change.

Start your own campaign, urge your governmental leaders for help, and buy quality food that you know you won’t waste.

Drop a comment if you have any questions about food waste management and be sure to explore our blog for more ways to live an environmentally-friendly lifestyle!

Reusing Plastic Water Bottles: Is It Safe?

Investigates claims that reusing plastic water bottles is dangerous

Reusing Plastic Water Bottles Drinking from a plastic water bottle is an easy way to get the water your body needs.

Reusing a plastic water bottle is even more convenient. But is using a plastic water bottle in this way safe?

This article investigates claims that reusing plastic water bottles is dangerous.

There are a few alleged problems with the practice, each of which will be dealt with in order.

First is the idea that over time bacteria (and possibly fungus) will proliferate to a dangerous degree in a plastic water bottle.

It is true that each drink out of a water bottle will inevitably transfer some bacteria to the bottle.

Also, that bacteria can flourish inside of water bottles — but does this pose a serious risk?

The theory is true — as far as it goes.

hug-a-tree and survive

Trees contribute much to our lives.

Hug-a-Tree and Survive., We have so many uses for them. Their wood keeps us warm, yields us sustenance, shelter, furniture, and the raw material for products like paper, cork, and rubber.

They also absorb some of the carbon dioxides that scientists hold responsible for global warming.

In Morocco, argan trees that provide the fruit kernels for making argan oil have long been used for all these other purposes as well. Local people call the argan “The Tree of Life”.

More recently, scientists have discovered that the fruit, leaves, and bark of these trees have some magical, medicinal properties.

In the Mediterranean, olive groves and citrus trees provide an income for many.

While in northern climes, orchards are cultivated for their fruit, to eat or make cider and calvados.

As the seasons take their turn

The changing trees add more beauty to our landscapes, and artists have been depicting them through the ages.
